Tips
When buying produce you should always follow these tips to ensure fresh quality.
Asparagus : Look for firm and tender stalks with close tips. Stalks with very little white are more tender. Asparagus tends to toughen quickly so use soon after buying.
Berries : Look for plump, solid berries with a good color. Avoid berries with bruises or seem mushy.
Broccoli and Cauliflower : Choose your clusters with closed heads. They should be firm not rubbery. Avoid heads that have dark spots. This may be a sign of age.
Brussel Sprouts : They should be firm and compact. Avoid sprouts that have dirty spots, this may be an indication of bugs.
Cabbage and Head Lettuce : Choose lettuce that are heavy in size, have good color, and firm. Make sure cabbage has no worm holes and are solid.
Cucumbers : The best quality for salads are long, slender, and have rich to medium green color. Stay away from yellow ones.
Melons : Cantalopes are ripe when stem scar is smooth and the netting is yellow to yellow green. When there is a fruity odor this indicates they are at their best.
Choose Honeydews that have a rind that is creamy to yellowish color. Avoid whitish-green honeydews.
Watermelons that are ripe will have a bit of yellow color on one side. If the melon has white or pale green on one side they are immature.
Lemons, Oranges and Grapefruit : You want to choose ones that are heavy in size, smooth, and have thinner skins. They will have more juices. Lemons that are deep in color are less tart than ones with light yellow color. Never choose a fruit that have soft or sucken spots.
Tomatoes : Choose tomatoes with solid and heavy in size. Make sure it has a nice red color. Avoid ones that have bruises or soft to the touch.
